description: After God recreated the heavens and earth in six days, resting on the seventh day, what did He do on the eighth day of creation? He evidently went back to work, not much different from us after we have had our Sabbath rest. However, God was no longer working on the physical creation, but on the much harder spiritual creation, selecting members for His family to take on the very likeness and character of Himself (Genesis 1:26). Mankind, in general, is unaware of the creative powers that are still at work today. One of Satan's damnable lies is that the whole creation occurred by natural cosmic forces and lovesick amoeba. Romans 1:20 assures us that God's fingerprints are all over creation. The Day of Atonement is a joyous day—a day to set everything aside that normally consumes our time, such as food, work, ourselves, and instead seek being at-one with our Creator with the spiritual tool of fasting, a practice which should, if our heart is in alignment with God, bring about sincere and genuine humility. Fasting anytime should be done with a purpose, namely drawing closer to Our Creator (James 4:8). Fasting should always be void of pride and self-seeking, traits of the prince and power of the air. Our Lord and Savior fasted for the purpose of drawing close to Our Heavenly Father. The best offering we can present to Almighty God is a humble and contrite heart, attainable through fasting, if done in a spirit of humility, making our living sacrifice a pleasing savor to God (Romans 12:1).
