description: Desmond Doss was the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor. This Sabbath-keeping medic exemplifies total conviction—a fixed belief and confidence in spite of ridicule and obstacles. As an ardent Seventh Day Adventist, he refused to work on the Sabbath or undergo weapons training in the military. He suffered opposition from his peers as well as from the officer corps. On May 5, 1944, his unit retreated in the face of overwhelming Japanese military operations at Hacksaw Ridge. Doss stayed behind alone, rescuing 75 wounded soldiers one by one. According to God's providence, Doss enjoyed protection as he executed his determination to leave no one behind. Gainsayers who had earlier harassed and persecuted him felt profound remorse; by the end of the war, Desmond Doss became the most beloved member of his company. Like Desmond Doss, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, God's people must learn that the perils or obstacles they face build faith and conviction, proving that all things work together for those who trust God and yield to His purpose for their lives. When God's people apply faith to every day-to-day situation, they strengthen their conviction.
