description: Contrary to the popular misconception that the prophet Jonah was a coward, he thought himself a brave patriot for Israel who would rather die than aid Almighty God in bringing Nineveh to repentance, willing to be tossed overboard than be deterred from escaping his responsibility to warn this pagan city. Jonah's worldview did not align with God's overview, believing that Israel's welfare was paramount to any Gentile nation, but especially Nineveh. Likewise, we, ignoring the counsel of Galatians 6:10, pick and choose whom we serve and whom we shy away from. Like Jonah, we must learn that: 1.) it is God's call alone whom He will call and whom He will not. 2.) God is not only Israel's God but is God of the Gentiles as well (Genesis 22:18). 3.) Running from the responsibilities and purposes God has called us is futile and unproductive. Submitting to the will of God is the only sane way a saint called of God should proceed.
